Tumblr Etiquette, or How Not To Be A Shitty Blog

Teaching you how to be a better blogger, one post at a time.

Anonymous asked: someone told me its not part of tumblr etiquette to share my tumblr website on facebook....why??

That’s just a silly notion some people have that “oh facebook and tumblr can’t ever meet because we’re a secret society!!!1one”

It’s dumb, don’t buy into it. It’s your blog, link it wherever you want. (:

itseasiertobesomebodyelse asked: I was just wondering myself about the whole weheartit controversy so that post was really helpful. Thanks a lot :)

You’re welcome c:

Anonymous asked: I'm confused about weheartit. Some people say it's not okay to post from there and others say it's fine. Do you know what makes it "wrong"?

Well, with the way images get around, images saved to weheartit usually end up being credited to a random blog rather than the real source. I’ve not looked at the controversy much myself, but I can only assume the whole lack of proper credit thing is the main reason people are upset. If anyone who actually knows what’s going on better than I do wants to chime in, please feel free. > >

Anonymous asked: what is the difference between liking and reblogging something?

one is a personal bookmark, the other puts it on your blog.

slugonabike asked: Following & ♡ing. Is it redundant to ♡ a post for someone you are following?

Not really no, especially if you’re following a lot of people. On my personal I follow well over 450 blogs, so the <3 feature is extremely useful for me when it comes to bookmarking things I like. C:

Anonymous asked: Is it okay to ask another blog to reblog one of your own posts? Or is that looked down upon?

If it’s a theme blog and they accept submissions it’s usually ok to ask them to reblog, in my experience. However most people (that I know) really hate it when they get reblog requests on their personals. I have a few friends who make exceptions when its a reblog for a good cause, but other than that…

Anonymous asked: I kind of just want a blog to express myself. I like tumblr because it is simple and easy to add pictures. I don't really want followers and I don't really want to be followed. Is this acceptable? I feel dumb for asking, but I was just curious if people could tell that I was a bump on the log and if it looked really bad? I am clueless.

That’s perfectly fine and very common too C:

Anonymous asked: Is it rude to remove/replace the click through links of the person you reblogged from even though they are not the owners of the original content and reblogged it from someone else?

If you are correcting the source (for example if someone who reblogged it set the clickthrough to their own blog rather than the material’s real source) then in general it is fine.

Just a little courtesy tip:

If you are in general a safe for work blog, it’s considered polite to tag that rare nsfw post you make as such. Since you generally post SFW content, that NSFW content may come out of left field for your followers, some of whom may have the #nsfw tag tumblr saviored to prevent them from seeing it. It’s very much appreciated when you do! <3

youdbehomebynow asked: Oh and another question. Is it lame to have a blog consisting entirely of re-blogs?

It’s all up to you. Some people like blogs with a lot of original content, others don’t care where it comes from. Do what you want. (:
